Rahal after crash: 'That's how you kill somebody' – WTHR

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – The 103rd Running of the Indianapolis 500 was a largely clean race in the first 175 laps. Just yellow flags, including one for an engine issue that never resulted in a crash and another for a mild spinout in pit row that also didn’t impact other drivers.

Then Sebastien Bourdais tapped Graham Rahal’s wheels on lap 176. Both crashed and took out three other drivers, too.

After getting cleared by the infield clinic, Rahal said, “I’m just very disappointed. It’s just another year to sit and think about it. I respect Sebastien as a driver, but I don’t respect that move.

“At those speeds, that’s how you kill somebody. I’m just not a fan of squeezing and putting people in those positions.”

Beyond safety concerns, Rahal also had room to upset because he was in position to have at least a top 10 finish. Instead, he finished 27th after starting at P15.

For his part, Bourdais said he doesn’t believe anyone is especially to blame, but does think Rahal could’ve just given up the position. He said it’s when neither driver gives that you end up in a wreck like that.

Bourdais was cited for making “avoidable contact” in the crash.
