If House Speaker Nancy Pelosi believes President Trump is a criminal, she should have the U.S. Capitol police arrest him.
“I don’t want to see him impeached,” the Democrat leader said, “I want to see him in prison.”
If so, she should order the Capitol cops, who guard Congress and who are under her control, to immediately take Trump into custody. The charges for the crimes he did not commit would be filed later.
It’s her duty. Besides, where is it written in the U.S. Constitution that a president is above the law and cannot be arrested? It isn’t.
As a matter of fact, at least two (that we know of) presidents have been arrested for bad behavior. And no president, according to Democrats, behaves more badly than Trump. Trump disagrees.
“She’s a nasty, vindictive, horrible person,” Trump said of Pelosi.
With Trump behind bars, Pelosi could then arrest Vice President Mike Pence, an obvious co-conspirator of the crimes that did not happen.
After taking both men down, Pelosi, third in the line of succession, would become president. The country and world would once again be safe for democracy. It would be a victory, like what happened when we stormed the beaches of Normandy and saved Western civilization.
European and other leaders around the world would love to see a Trump takedown. With Nancy in charge, it would be like having Barack Obama back in the White House along with his Make America Mediocre Again program.
Secret flights of planes loaded with cash for the mullahs in Iran would resume; deadbeat NATO members would once again pocket their dues; and the U.S Border Patrol would be abolished.
Illegal immigrants would automatically be declared American citizens with the right to vote — Democratic, of course — before they lined up for food stamps, free housing, free health care, free college and other free stuff.
The New York Times, Washington Post and the rest of the corrupt establishment media would also love it. It would be a replay of their attempt, along with dirty FBI agents, to destroy Trump with the phony Russian collusion hoax that was partially financed by the Hillary Clinton campaign.
It won’t be easy to dump Trump. though. Trump is a fighter, a counter puncher who will not easily go down.
And while Pelosi has some 2,300 cops of the U.S. Capitol police force, who protect Congress at her command, Trump has the Secret Service that protects him.
The agents of the Secret Service are not only better trained and armed than the Capitol Police, they dress better and sport scary sunglasses. And there are more of them.
The Capitol police would have to go against at least 3,200 special Secret Service agents, backed by 1,300 uniformed agents as well as another 2000 support personnel.
While the Constitution protects members of Congress from arrest when they are performing their duties, there is no such provision for the president.
Still, even a brave, or foolish, Capitol cop might find it difficult to get close enough to the president to make an arrest, even though theoretically the president is not above the law.
But there is precedent for arresting a president.
President Ulysses Grant, a great Civil War general, who had a battle with the bottle, was arrested for what we today call distracted driving. Grant, according to the Washington Post, was speeding in his horse-drawn carriage in Washington in 1872 when he was stopped by a cop.
Since it was his second offense Grant was arrested and forced to pay a $20 fine.
Years earlier President Franklin Pierce, the 14th president of the United States, who also drank a bit, was arrested for running down an elderly woman while on horseback in 1853. The case was dropped because of insufficient evidence.
In neither case was there any evidence of collusion with the Russians or obstruction of justice.
All of this would be a bit of a summer smile if the problems the country faces were not so serious, and the country not so divided. There is plenty of blame to go around.
Nasty politics and nasty politicians are killing the country.
Pelosi should impeach herself.
