The Perseids Meteor Shower will be a prime-time attraction at several Long Island beaches.

Four Long Island State Parks will remain open during the nighttime hours for viewing of the Perseids Meteor Shower on the evening of Monday, Aug. 12, according to the New York State Park Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

Peak Viewing times of the meteor shower are predawn, Tuesday, Aug. 13.

This week, the earth passes through a stream of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, source of the annual Perseid meteor shower.

There will be no charge to enjoy the celestial show from these parks and the normal star gazing permit will not be required:

  • Jones Beach State Park – West End II
  • Gov. Alfred E. Smith/Sunken Meadow State Park – Field 3
  • Montauk Point State Park – Upper Parking Lot
  • Wildwood State Park – main Parking Lot.

Visitors must remain near their cars and should dress appropriately, bring bug spray, and a chair that reclines. Binoculars won’t be needed. To view the meteor shower look towards the northeast, said park officials.
