Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton were lucky enough to find their literal Prince Charming. For them, this wasn’t just a fairy-tale-like telling of a commoner’s love story, but a reality. While both lucky ladies have an amazing story about finding their Prince, people wonder which duchess has a better love story?
How Kate Middleton met Prince William
Kate and William’s royal fairy tale began in a very common way: The two met in 2001 while studying at the University of St Andrews, where they both lived at the school’s St Salvador’s Hall. It was in 2002 that William claims to have fallen in love with Kate, after seeing her appear in a charity fashion show hosted by the school.
Despite having already fallen for Kate, the couple did not begin dating until the following year. When they did, they kept the relationship a carefully guarded secret for fear of media harassment. The fear was well-founded because once the relationship went public, Kate became the object of a lot of media attention.
The pressure and stress caused by the media was so much that Kate and William broke up for a short period of time in 2007. They did (obviously) get back together again, and William finally proposed to his beloved in 2010 while vacationing in Kenya. They were married (ironically) on St Catherine’s Day in 2011.
How Meghan Markle met Prince Harry
Meghan and Prince Harry were first introduced in 2016 by Violet von Westenholz, a London-based public relations director who had already been part of the prince’s inner circle for years. According to von Westenholz, her friend had been “having a really hard time finding anyone.” When the PR director noticed Markle, she told Harry that she “might just have found the perfect” for him.
Eventually Markle and Prince Harry met on a blind date in Toronto, Canada where Markle was living while filming Suits. They began talking over drinks, and it soon led to talking of future meetings. The rest was fairy tale history.
Similarities and differences in their love stories
Both Meghan and Kate were commoners before meeting their future husbands. This is remarkable because a marriage between a royal and commoner is rare, albeit not unheard of. A difference; however, is that Meghan is an American while Kate is British.
Another similarity is that both Megan and Kate had to deal with a lot of press coverage — and much of it was not so nice. This is reminiscent of what happened with William and Harry’s mother, Princess Diana. Even after officially becoming members of the royal family after marriage, the media has continued their harassing. Thankfully, it has died down a little recently.
One major difference in the two Duchess’ love stories is how quickly the relationships progressed. William and Kate took their time, with just a few years shy of a decade passing between their first date and their marriage. Comparatively it would seem that Prince Harry and Markle ran down the aisle, with a significantly faster moving relationship.
Which love story is better?
So, which love story is better? Neither, really. They are both beautiful in their own ways and have led to the happiness of Kate and Meghan and their respective princes. Each woman is contently living out her happily ever after, and both are adding to the British royal family with their own children. Kate is now the proud mother of three: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Meghan is due any day now with her first child.
