First human case of West Nile virus reported in Wisconsin – Channel3000.com – WISC-TV3

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported the first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in the state on Wednesday.

Health officials are advising Wisconsin residents to continue protecting themselves against mosquito bites after a confirmed case in a resident of Northeastern Wisconsin.

According to the release, most cases of WNV happen during the months of August and September, though the likelihood of contracting the virus are very low. While most people who contract the virus don’t get sick, those who do typically experience symptoms including a fever, headache, and rash that lasts a few days. In extremely rare cases, WNV can cause severe disease with symptoms such as disorientation, tremors, paralysis, inflammation of the brain, and coma, according to the release.

DHS officials said limiting time outside during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, ensuring window and door screens are properly sealed and using an insect repellent are some of the ways to fend off mosquitoes and their bites.
